Crowdsourcing the Expanded Ebook
A small test. If you have a nonfiction book which you believe a niche audience will enjoy debating, what can you do to incorporate the conversation back into the book? What if it’s about The Yugo?
Of course, crowdsourcing is nothing new: see Pogue’s Twitter book, McKenzie Wark’s Gamer Theory, or even my own Chapter 18 Project with Thomas L. Friedman. What we’re planning on now is releasing an updated ebook edition of Hill & Wang’s The Yugo: The Rise and Fall of the Worst Car in History with readers’ own Yugo stories within weeks of publication. We’re not waiting til the paperback.
What does this mean? Basically the author, Jason Vuic, is culling through the contributions to pick his favorites (like “A Yugo ran over my foot and I barely noticed”), which I’ll simply append to the epub file and run it through our production workflow. It will be on the e-retailer sites as soon as they’ve approved it. Because, why not?
